Many years ago when I was preparing for my first day of teaching I wanted to plan all my lessons so that the kids got to learn something important and tell me something about themselves. I cam across this stick person portrait on Art Projects for Kids and I have used it every year since. This project is a great way to encourage students to personalize their artwork. Its also great for teaching that our hair makes a shape on our head and color schemes. This year first graders focused on putting their colors in ROY G BIV order!

We started by watching and listening to ROY G BIV by They Might Be Giants on youtube at the beginning of class. This song is a big hit every year!

The we drew our person while talking about different shapes we could use for hair and clothes. They turned out adorable and I can’t wait to see what these little firsties will do on their next project!
